Selective vs Drive In: which racking fits your warehouse?

The two most common pallet racking systems in Vietnamese plants and logistics warehouses are Selective and Drive In. Both are heavy-duty, but their operating logic and storage density differ sharply — the wrong choice slows inbound/outbound or wastes floor space.

Selective racking: flexible, 100% location access

Selective places an aisle between rack rows. Forklifts reach every pallet directly — ideal for multi-SKU warehouses with fast rotation and clear FIFO needs. Capex is usually lower than high-density systems; in return, density stays moderate because aisle space must be reserved.

• Best for: multi-SKU warehouses, spare parts, multi-category distribution
• Strengths: fast picking, easy expansion, straightforward operator training
• Limits: more floor area devoted to aisles than Drive In / Shuttle

Drive In racking: high density for uniform goods

Drive In lets forklifts enter deep into rack “tunnels.” Fewer aisles mean clearly higher pallet density — especially useful for cold stores, FMCG or large-lot inventory with few SKUs. The system typically runs LIFO; strict FIFO needs careful lane design and inbound/outbound processes.

• Best for: uniform goods, large pallet volumes, low SKU volatility
• Strengths: more positions on the same footprint, lower refrigerated volume cost
• Limits: slower access to individual pallets than Selective; requires strong forklift skills

Quick selection tips

If your warehouse has many SKUs and must retrieve any pallet within minutes, prioritize Selective (or Double Deep / VNA when you want higher density while keeping relatively flexible access). If the goal is to maximize pallet positions for a few stable product lines, Drive In or Shuttle is usually more effective.
